Mi infancia son recuerdos de un patio de Sevilla,
Antonio Machado's poetry has been one of my great sources of inspiration, even for a long time before creating this web portfolio. He has been present and has been the champion of each of the steps I have taken on my way, and has directly motivated some of my most beloved artistic projects, such as the mural dedicated to his poem Pegasos, lindos pegasos.
Born on July 26, 1875 in the Palacio de Las Dueñas in Seville, he was the youngest representative of the poetic generation of '98 and one of the outstanding students of the Institución Libre de Enseñanza (The Free Institution of Education) in Madrid. A modernist poet in his early days, he evolved towards romantic symbolism of a humanist nature and always heavily influenced by popular culture. Trained as a French teacher, he went to work in Soria where he met his wife, Leonor Izquierdo. After her premature death, and already being a recognized and admired poet, Machado decided to go south again, to distant Baeza. There he lived for seven years in which he worked with young students and met a promising young poet from Granada: Federico García Lorca.
He was working in Segovia when the Second Republic was proclaimed, and the new government granted him a position as a professor in Madrid. A man of firm humanist and republican principles, Antonio Machado was always committed to culture and education. Already during the civil war he went into exile in Valencia together with the provisional government, and from there he undertook his final flight to Barcelona and later to his last stop: Collioure. His mother, Ana Ruiz, died just three days later. A few days later he received a communication informing him that the University of Cambridge offered him a job.
Some time ago I had a powerful and evocative idea: to capture the artistic and emotional link that unites me to his poetic work in some of the places that were transcendental throughout the life of Antonio Machado, uniting them with others that, in some way, have been for me. This task required the help of other people, and after consulting it, I found people willing to walk this path with me. During the last weeks they have helped me to take my art to some of Machado places.
