Tribute to Antonio Machado

Antonio Machado Ruiz died of sadness and exile on February 22, 1939 in Collioure, a small coastal town in the south of France, close to the Spanish border. It had been barely a month since he had left the country that he had loved so much and that had made him suffer a lot in recent years. Accompanied by his mother, family, friends, acquaintances and many anonymous people who fled in despair from a country torn apart by a Civil War that was approaching its imminent end after the capture of Barcelona by fascist coup leaders.

Gerardo Diego had said of him that "he spoke in verse and lived in poetry." His art is so transcendental for Spanish poetry that it will always live in our collective memory. When he died, in the pocket of his overcoat was found a piece of paper on which he had written those who were his last verse: "these blue days and this childhood sun." Nuda Veritas (Tribute to Klimt: Chapter 7)

At the end of the 19th century the art movement of the Secession was in full swing. Driven by the desire to fight against the most conservative vision of art, which until then had been dominated by the bourgeois and censoring elite, they intended to universalize it by making it more mundane and bringing it closer to all social strata. A new century came to Vienna with them.

In 1897 they created the Ver Sacrum magazine. After having been elected as president of the Secession by his fellow artists, Gustav Klimt took the reins of the third number of the magazine, for which he created some illustrations among which Nuda Veritas and The Envy (Der Neid) stand out.

Originally conceived as an ink drawing for the magazine, these illustrations became the featured image of the third issue. With a forceful and revealing stroke, it came to confirm that Klimt was an excellent sketcher. As he did with other works throughout his career, some time later he took up the idea again, resulting in the giant canvas that, with wavy and sensual lines so typical of Art Nouveau, claims an integral eroticism that ends with a quote from Schiller that the painter makes his own:

Antonio va de camino por esos campos de dios

El 22 de febrero de 1939 murió -de tristeza y exilio- Antonio Machado en Collioure, uno de los primeros pueblecitos costeros franceses al otro lado de la frontera española. La había cruzado unos pocos días junto a su madre, Ana Ruiz, y otros derrotados compatriotas ante el inminente final de la guerra civil.

El año pasado, gracias a la ayuda de amigas y amigos, realicé un recorrido por algunos de los lugares importantes en su vida. Quedaron entonces algunos destinos pendientes, y este año he retomado la senda que él pisó y siguiendo los pasos de aquel caminante en su camino llegué hasta los campos castellanos de Segovia. He aquí la pequeña muestra fotográfia que atestigua mi paso por la ciudad y que se añade a mi tributo a Antonio Machado a la espera de nuevos viajes tras la huella el poeta.

The Hope (Tribute to Klimt: Chapter 6)

Made in its heyday, The Hope I and II constitute one of the greatest praises to women in all their dimensions. Flags of Gustav Klimt's style in the eyes of the art world, vindicate the female empowerment as the central figure on which the new art revolves, charged with sensuality and not for that reason stripped of the naturalness with which the Austrian artist intends to vindicate the role of women.

A notable difference can be seen between the two works whose completion is four years away in time.The first of these appears to us overwhelmingly erotic. We find ourselves with the complete nude of a shameless redhead, in fact, the exuberant reddish pubic hair only increases the feeling of perversity. Loaded with symbolism, the shapes and currents that adorn the painting allude to life and death, sensuality and sexuality.

The Girlfriends (Tribute to Klimt: Chapter 5)

Retired on the outskirts of Vienna, the late Klimt gives us a series of fresh and colorful artworks, far removed from the exaggeratedly ornate baroque style that had been so characteristic of his classical work. However, it does not abandon the motives that had been its emblem: the woman continues to be the central axis of his creative universe, focused from eroticism and lesbian love.

Having become a portraitist of bourgeois women, we appreciate in the works of his final stage a substantial change in the color palette, in the style and in the influences. Here we are presented with a clearly calmer Klimt. The mosaics, the golden ornaments and the baroquely charged prints have given way to an appeased use of color and in chromatic harmony with the content, revealing clear Asian and Impressionist influences.

Homenaje a Pablo Neruda

El 12 de julio de 1904 nació en Parral (zona central de Chile) el poeta Ricardo Eliécer Neftalí Reyes Basoalto, aunque seguramente es mucho más recordado por su seudónimo: Pablo Neruda.

Considerado con justicia como uno de los artistas más influyentes y destacados de su época, Gabriel García Márquez lo definió como "el más grande poeta del siglo XX en cualquier idioma." Vanguardista, modernista, galardonado con el Premio Nobel de Literatura en 1971 y político del partido comunista, fue senador en su país y embajador en Francia y en España, donde se relacionó entre otros artistas especialmente con Miguel Hernández.

Para celebrar la efeméride de su aniversario, amplío la colección de mi rincón poético recuperando esta combinación de mi caligrama inspirado en Neruda y el abanico-caligrama del Museo de arte abstracto de Cuenca. ¡Vive Neruda!

30 años sin Camarón de la Isla

El 2 de julio de 1992 murió en Badalona el gaditano José Monje Cruz, el artista conocido mundialmente como Camarón de la Isla. Hay pocas cosas que se puedan decir de alguien tan universal como él. Perfecto dominador y conocedor de todos los secretos de su arte, despuntó desde niño, y se fue ganando admiradores a lo largo de su meteórica carrera. Amante de la música, exploró nuevos terrenos como la fusión del flamenco con el jazz, la rumba y los arreglos rockeros, lo que le valió la antipatía entre los más puristas. Esa inquietud creativa, lejos de achicar su grandeza, le valió el reconocimiento internacional, haciendo llegar a públicos grandes y diversos una música que se movía en círculos demasiado cerrados.

Por estas cosas y muchas otras, Camarón es eterno. Recomiendo el visionado del documental De la isla al mito, de Netflix, para conocer más detalladamente su vida. Y, para celebrar una efeméride tan especial como el trigésimo aniversario de su muerte, no podía resistirme a confeccionar una playlist con 30 canciones que considero esenciales para acercarse o disfrutar de la música de un artista tan magno y que puedes escuchar haciendo click aquí. He passed away with his eyes open, blue as the sky and big as his curiosity and his vital impetus; those wild and expressive eyes, vehement as he himself was, with quick and sharp words, but a tender heart. He died on March 28th 1942, the Saturday before Easter, in Alicante. But not completely, because whoever is eternal never disappears.

Murió con los ojos abiertos, y con ellos abiertos se fue a la tumba. Nadie pudo cerrárselos. Fue su penúltimo acto de rebeldía contra ese mundo hostil en el que nunca halló el acomodo que habría necesitado para sentirse querido, el mismo mundo que se empeñó en darle batalla hasta que su ánimo fue terciopelo ajado. Se fue con los ojos abiertos, azules como el cielo y grandes como su curiosidad y su ímpetu vital; esos ojos desorbitados y expresivos, vehementes como él mismo era, de salto fácil y palabras fuertes y afiladas, pero corazón tierno. Murió el 28 de marzo de 1942, sábado antes de domingo de Ramos, en Alicante. Pero no del todo, porque quien es eterno, nunca desaparece.

Danae (Tribute to Klimt: Chapter 4)

Klimt had somehow abandoned his most erotic essence with the creation of The Kiss, which had partly led him to be the standard-bearer of the Secession and challenge the moral and aesthetic canons of his time. With Danae returns to his most authentic path, that of the most symbolic and overflowing eroticism. It is possibly his most erotic and passionate work.

The Oracle predicted to Acrisio, king of Argos, that a grandson who had not yet been born would be his murderer. To prevent this, he locks his daughter Danae in a tall bronze tower. The libidinous Zeus discovers the facts, and turns into a shower of gold to enter the pressure and impregnate the young woman. It was too rich a Greek myth for Klimt to pass up the opportunity to give him his vision of it.

El 22 de febrero de 1939 murió -de tristeza y exilio- Antonio Machado Ruiz en Collioure, Francia, cerca de la frontera con España que había cruzado días antes en los estertores de la guerra civil.

Nacido el 26 de julio de 1875 en el sevillano Palacio de Las Dueñas, fue el más joven representante de la generación del 98 y uno de los alumnos destacados de la Institución Libre de Enseñanza. Poeta modernista en sus inicios, evolucionó hacia el simbolismo romántico de corte humanista y siempre muy influenciado por la cultura popular.

Gerardo Diego dijo de él que «hablaba en verso y vivía en poesía». Su arte es tan trascendental para la poesía española que siempre vivirá en nuestra memoria colectiva. Al morir, en el bolsillo de su gabán se encontró un papelito en el cual había escrito los que fueron sus últimos versos:

The artistic movement of the Secession, which sought to break with the classical norms of art, was at its height at the end of the 19th century. Its members, championed by Klimt himself, longed for an opening in the world of art that would allow them to create and live on it outside the great state powers, seeking their patronage in more mundane circles, as well as freer and less restricted by the censorship. Leaving government commissions aside, Gustav opens a period of transition between his classical realist stage and the incipient revolutionary modernism of Art Nouveau.

François Roland Truffaut nació en París el 6 de febrero de 1932. Director, guionista, crítico de cine y actor, fue uno de los iniciadores -principalmente junto a Jean‑Luc Godard- y también uno de los máximos exponentes del movimiento renovador cinematográfico conocido como la Nouvelle vague, si bien sus diferentes componentes después evolucionaron por caminos muy distintos.

Tribute to Klimt

On February 6th 1918, while the World War was approaching its inexorable end in a destroyed Europe and the Austro-Hungarian Empire was rushing its last months of life, Gustav Klimt died in Vienna victim of apoplexy.

One hundred years after Klimt's death, it would not be fair to simplify our view of his art with the premise that "all art is erotic." It is necessary to immerse yourself in the Klimtian spirit to understand that his universe is more complex and always interesting.

I have worked hard to pay direct tribute to some of Gustav Klimt's most significant pieces, giving them my vision and fusing their inspiration with my style. I hope you like this work and appreciate the effort and dedication behind it.

30 años sin Freddie Mercury

El año en que murió Freddie Mercury yo tenía ocho años. Ciertas personas que me conocen bastante bien me han comentado en alguna ocasión que mi memoria episódica es excelente, pero tiendo a usarla para recordar hechos y datos que, en realidad, suelen ser irrelevantes o poco productivos. Esta afirmación es relativa, como todo en la vida. Para ellos quizás no sea útil recordar la primera vez que escucharon una canción de Queen, pero para mí fue muy importante, pues me produjo una gran felicidad.

Recuerdo vagamente el día en que murió Freddie, salvo por algún pequeño flash de haber visto la noticia por televisión y suponer que se trataba de alguien importante, aunque sin llegar a entender mucho. Para mí aún era un desconocido, no sabía nada de su personalidad ni de su música. Sin embargo, las cosas pronto iban a cambiar...

30 años sin Tino Casal

La estampa describe una clásica escena costumbrista: años ochenta, España. La vieja -moderna entonces- televisión de tubo catódico rompe la penumbra de un salón decorado con muebles de comglomerado que imita la madera de haya. Los fogonazos de La bola de cristal iluminan por momentos la estancia, bombardeando con imágenes que se suceden en una secuencia aparentemente aleatoria: alguien mondando una naranja; fotogramas de antiguas películas de animación; una bailarina girando en una caja musical; seda, medias, zapatos, terciopelo, fuego, destrucción... Un extravagante tipo baila y canta ataviado en extrañas ropas impropias de su época. Zapatos de piel que brillan como el sol al ritmo del baile, un abanico que agita, pulseras, collares, joyas, pedrería, ropa holgada, cuero y un peinado imposible... Él es el techno, el glam. Es alguien que pertenece a otro tiempo, a otro país. No es de este mundo. Un niño intenta seguir torpemente los pasos frente al televisor, entusiasmado por lo que está viviendo. La madre entra y le pregunta quién es el cantante. "¡Mamá! ¿No lo sabes? ¡Es tino Casal!", le respondí.

El 3 de julio de 1971 murió Jim Morrison en París, de repente y con misterio. Con la desaparición del líder de The Doors se ponía fin a un periodo terrible que, en apenas nueve meses, se llevó a los 27 años la vida de mitos como Jimi Hendrix y Janis Joplin. Inauguro con esta publicación mi sección sobre música.
